Tulsi Gabbard suggests Obama behind 'Ministry of Truth' while Biden is 'front man'
Obama argued that content moderation "shouldn't be left solely to private interests."
Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) suggested that former President Barack Obama is connected to the Department of Homeland Security's newly-established Disinformation Governance Board, which she called the "Ministry of Truth," from George Orwell's dystopian novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four."
"Biden is just a front man," Gabbard, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, tweeted on Sunday with a video of Obama calling for content moderation during a Stanford University speech earlier this month.
"Obama, April 21: social media censors 'don’t go far enough,' so the government needs to step in to do the job. Six days later, Homeland Security rolls out the 'Ministry of Truth' (aka Disinformation Governance Board)," she wrote.
Obama called for more oversight during his speech.
"Now the good news is that almost all the big tech platforms now acknowledge some responsibility for content on their platforms, and they're investing in large team of people to monitor it. Given the sheer volume of content, this strategy can feel like a game of Whac-A-Mole," Obama noted.
He said that while he believes content moderators are "sincere," companies "don't want to be accused of censorship because they still have a financial incentive to keep as many users engaged as possible."
Obama argued that "decisions like this shouldn't be left solely to private interests."
During a House hearing on Wednesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas disclosed the creation of the Disinformation Governance Board, which will focus on combating misinformation focused on Russia and irregular migration. The announcement of the new government entity came two days after Elon Musk secured a deal to purchase Twitter for $44 billion.
Gabbard has slammed the Biden administration's Disinformation Governance Board repeatedly since it was announced.
"Every dictatorship has a propaganda arm—a 'Ministry of Truth.' The Biden Administration has now formally joined the ranks of such dictatorships with their creation of the so-called 'Disinformation Governance Board,'" she tweeted on Friday.
Last week, GETTR CEO Jason Miller told "Just the News – Not Noise" that federal involvement in online censorship began under Obama's presidency when he "set the stage for the government takeover of moderation."
