White House joins Reddit to keep Americans updated on Hurricane Milton
The White House said the Reddit page will have information about the Biden administration's ongoing response to the hurricane, along with updates from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It will also have sub-Reddits with updates from each state impacted by the storm.
The White House announced on Tuesday that it was creating a Reddit page for official updates regarding Hurricane Milton, saying it was doing so to "reach people" across different platforms.
Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday night as a Category 3 or Category 4 storm, just two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the Southeast. Evacuation orders have been issued on much of the state's western coast.
The White House said the Reddit page will have information about the Biden administration's ongoing response to the hurricane, along with updates from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It will also have sub-Reddits with updates from each state impacted by the storm, according to The Hill.
“We are leaving no stone unturned to reach people where they are, across different digital destinations as well as across different topics,” a White House official said in a statement. “The White House will also ensure our information is shared on larger sub-Reddits like r/politics, where we can correct misinformation and clarify the work that has been done by federal agencies in coordination with state and local entities."
Reddit is known for being a more casual social media platform that users use to discuss a range of issues such as popular culture and politics in a forum type setting.
President Joe Biden urged residents in Florida on Tuesday to evacuate as soon as possible, because experts have warned that the storm could be the biggest to hit the state in 100 years.
“If you’re under evacuation order, you should evacuate now. Now, now, now. You should have already evacuated. It’s a matter of life and death,” Biden said.
The Biden administration has been blasted over the federal response to Hurricane Helene, after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned FEMA would run out of money before the end of hurricane season next month.
The White House has assured Americans that FEMA has enough money to handle hurricanes Helene and Milton.
