Two people injured in officer-involved shooting near White House: Secret Service
The Secret Service said the shooting took place at 15th Street and Independence Ave in the northwest quadrant of the city and the public should avoid the area while emergency crews respond.
The United States Secret Service said Monday that a suspect and one bystander were injured in an officer-involved shooting near the White House, but their conditions are not currently known.
Gunshots were reportedly heard as President Donald Trump took the stage inside the East Room for a Small Business Summit, according to the Daily Caller, and authorities sent the press into the briefing room for safety precautions while areas were placed under lockdown.
The Secret Service said the shooting took place at 15th Street and Independence Ave in the northwest quadrant of the city and was the result of a confrontation between an armed individual and the Secret Service police.
Deputy Secret Service Director Matt Quinn told reporters that the suspect and a teenage bystander were both injured in the shooting and transported to nearby hospitals. Neither person has been identified so far, according to the New York Times.
The suspect has been placed in police custody at the hospital, Quinn said.
The incident comes just over a week after an alleged gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton late last month. One Secret Service agent was shot at the Hilton but was not injured.
