One person was killed early Monday morning in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement-involved shooting in Maine, according to a state elected official. The incident occurred in the city of Biddeford, said Maine Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau on social media.

Biddeford is a coastal city of about 23,000 people, roughly 15 miles south-west of Portland.

“This morning a shooting occurred in Biddeford. A person was killed. ICE was involved,” Fecteau wrote, referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “State Police and the Department of Public Safety are now on scene to gather details and would expect the FBI to investigate as well.” Fecteau said those were the only details he knew and that he would provide updates later Monday.

ICE, the FBI and the Maine Department of Public Safety didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Associated Press quoted Senator Angus King, I-Me., as saying "Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the officer opened fire after the man tried to use his vehicle as a weapon against officers who were pursuing him for deportation in Biddeford, a coastal city of about 23,000 people roughly 15 miles (24 kilometers) south-west of Portland.

CNN reported later that "in the hours since his press conference Monday, Sen. Angus King again spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who said the man fatally shot by federal agents in Biddeford was “NOT the target of the warrant” according to the Maine senator’s office.

Project Relief, an immigrant rights group, wrote in a social media post that one of its community members was killed “during an encounter with ICE in Biddeford” and that it was in contact with the person’s family. The group described the person as “young,” but didn’t provide an age or other identifying details.

The AP also reported that "The advocacy groups Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente! said the man who was killed was authorized to work in the U.S. and had a Social Security number." After the shooting, his family contacted the Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, executive director Mufalo Chitam told the AP.

An unconfirmed video circulating on social media and aired by CNN shows a car with bullet holes in the front windshield and officers tending to a person on the ground.

“The shooting in Biddeford requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened. It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site and that the FBI is investigating,” Sen. Susan Collins, R-Me, said in a post on the social platform X Monday afternoon.
