President Donald Trump is vowing the federal government might take over the nation's capital if Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist candidate for mayor, wins the election.

Trump's statement was in response to a reporter Thursday comparing Lewis George's campaign to that of New York Mayor Zoran Mumdani, who also ran on a promise to enact socialist policies in the city.

"I wouldn't like it," Trump replied. "And maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis. We won't put up with it. We're not going to lose our businesses,"

Lewis George has been shown to be leading the race in recent polls. She is running in the city's Democratic primary, which is June 19. A win would also assure her the mayor's post, considering Washington, D.C., has not elected a Republican mayor since Home Rule was enacted in 1974.
