A knife-carrying pilot flying a commercial flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday tried to stab a fellow pilot, resulting in the jet plummeting roughly 16,000 feet before making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, according to multiple news reports. 

As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no official law enforcement report on the incident, including a motive or possible motive. 

“At this early stage, the underlying reasons and motives behind this event are unknown and remain subject to a formal investigation," said the airline, FlyDubai. "We urge all parties to refrain from premature speculation while authorities gather the facts."

The flight reportedly had roughly 170 people aboard. 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says passengers and crew aboard the Boeing 737 Max subdued the attacker.

"I salute these heroes, who displayed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives. They prevented a huge disaster," he said in a statement. 

Video footage circulating on social media and reviewed by the Associated Press showed two men on the plane’s floor, bloodied and wounded. Two people appeared to be providing medical treatment, while two others guarded the cockpit.

Publicly available data shows the aircraft plunged from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about a minute.

Netanyahu said that almost all passengers onboard the flight were Israeli.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz is calling the incident an "attempted jihadist attack."

Cluster2 Airports, which operates at several airports across Saudi Arabia, told NBC News that both the captain and first officer of FlyDubai Flight FZ 1073 were injured in the incident and taken to a hospital. 

Two Israeli jets were scrambled to intercept the flight in response to the incident.
