NY Mayor Mandami says he asked Trump to release illegal migrant shot in ICE operation, remove agents
The shooting occurred at about 4 p.m., and the victim has been identified as Oscar Belgal, who reportedly is a Dominican national with prior criminal convictions.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani say he tried unsuccessfully Thursday evening to negotiate the release of the illegal migrant shot by at least one Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in what the agency calls a "targeted enforcement operation" in the city's Marble Hill neighborhood.
“For the past two hours, I’ve been on the phone with President Trump and [Homeland Security] Secretary Mullin negotiating the release of the man ICE agents shot. Those negotiations were unsuccessful,” he said, according to The Daily Wire. “Now I made clear to the president, to the secretary, our request that ICE agents leave the scene entirely – as well as the demand that ICE stop its enforcement actions in New York City.”
The shooting occurred at about 4 p.m., and the victim has been identified as Oscar Belgal, who reportedly is a Dominican national with prior criminal convictions. ICE agents reportedly surrounded his vehicle and fired multiple rounds through the front windshield. A 5-year-old in the backseat was unharmed.
The incident sparked protests at New York-Presbyterian Allen, where the 28-year-old Belgal was taken. He is reportedly in stable condition.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at least one ICE officer discharged a weapon seven times, striking the driver in the neck below their left ear, according to local TV station ABC-7 New York.
