Trump hints at potential release of American Stephen Hubbard, who is jailed in Russia
The president said he and his administration are working to bring Stephen Hubbard back to the United States, after Russian forces detained him in Ukraine during Russia's 2022 invasion of the country.
President Donald Trump hinted Tuesday at the potential release of an American citizen who is considered wrongfully imprisoned in Russia.
The president said he and his administration are working to bring Stephen Hubbard back to the United States, after Russian forces detained him in Ukraine during Russia's 2022 invasion of the country.
Reporters at the White House asked the president about reports of Hubbard's possible release. Trump confirmed that he's asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to release him but the deal does not appear finalized.
“Remember that question for a couple of days from now,” Trump said. “I’ve been talking to President Putin about Mr. Hubbard. I’ve been talking to him at length. I’ve asked him to release him."
Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Trump’s top envoy for peace negotiations, Steve Witkoff, are leading the negotiations for Hubbard’s release this week in Moscow, according to The Hill.
The potential release comes as Hubbard has spent two of his seven-year sentence in a penal colony. Hubbard was accused by Russia of manning a checkpoint and fighting for Ukraine and was convicted in October 2024 of being a mercenary.
The development comes as the administration counts more than 100 Americans the president helped leave foreign jails so far.
