The disbarred South Carolina attorney, whose double murder conviction was tossed last week, is suing the former county clerk who allegedly interfered with the jury that found him guilty of the murders of his wife and son in 2023.

Alex Murdaugh filed a civil rights lawsuit against Rebecca "Becky" Hill in U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, NBC News reported

The lawsuit, which claims Murdaugh suffered $600,000 in monetary damages, also seeks to recover attorney's fees and costs.

The South Carolina Supreme Court last week overturned attorney Murdaugh's conviction, ruling that Hill, who was Colleton County clerk of court at the time, prejudiced the jurors toward a guilty verdict before they began deliberating.

Hill, who was an elected official tasked with managing the trial and overseeing the jury, made comments to the jurors that the justices deemed inappropriate. These comments included stating that the jurors shouldn't "be fooled" by evidence Murdaugh's attorneys presented, to watch Murdaugh's actions and movements closely before he took the stand, and that the deliberations shouldn't take long.

The high court's ruling called Hill's comments "breathtaking and disgraceful," as they "essentially implored the jurors to find him guilty." As an official who voters elected into the position, Hill's comments were especially damaging, the justices ruled.

Jim Griffin, one of Murdaugh's attorneys, told NBC that none of the money, if there is a settlement, would go to him.

Hill pleaded guilty last year to criminal charges for showing sealed court exhibits to a photographer and lying about it in court, NBC reported. She was sentenced to a year of probation and denied she ever improperly influenced the jury.
