Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed Thursday that three children and one adult were killed in a mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

The victims have been described as three children and one adult. The suspected shooter, identified as a 16-year-old Bend resident, was also killed. The suspect's name has not been released.

The three children were aged five, eight and 11-years-old, Krantz said in a news briefing, and one teacher was killed. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries.

Police officials said they responded to a call of a shot fired into a car at about 1 p.m. local time. When they arrived at the scene, they learned the shooter had been shot and killed inside the school by a community member.

The suspect, who was armed with a long gun, allegedly forced their way into the school by shooting at locked doors.

“We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing."

School officials have canceled classes, activities and athletic events across Bend-La Pine Schools that were scheduled for Friday. Between 400 and 450 children attend the elementary school, where there is a staff of more than 40 people.
