Former NBA star Enes Kanter Freedom on Thursday filed a federal complaint against the WNBA team Chicago Sky and the city of Chicago after he was booted from the women's basketball game last month following an altercation with a player.

Freedom claimed Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud made a crude remark at him before he was removed from the arena and that he believed the shirt he was wearing, which defined a woman as being an adult human female, contributed to the issue. 

The former NBA player said he had just been exercising his First Amendment rights when he was ejected from the game. 

"Just filed a federal complaint. I’m taking legal action over my ejection from the Chicago sky game while peacefully exercising my First Amendment rights," he said in a post announcing the legal action.

"My T-shirt did what the whole WNBA apparently couldn’t: Define a woman," he continued. "No threats. No violence. Just biology. And somehow, that required a security escort. You don’t have to agree with my speech but you don’t get to silence me for it. I will not be intimidated. I will not be silenced. I will continue to stand for women and defend free speech."

The move comes after Freedom declared for the 2027 WNBA draft last month in what appears to be an attempt to challenge league rules about transgender players. 

Under current WNBA policy, only women are eligible to play. No transgender player is known to be competing in the Women's National Basketball League, the WNBA. And the league does not have a specific policy on the matter.
