New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared to be booed off the stage this week at a pro-New York Police Department event on Staten Island over his past support for calls to "defund the police."

The mayor, a democratic socialist, attempted to deliver remarks at the NYPD's 43rd Patrol Borough National Night Out Against Crime event on Tuesday. However, his speech lasted less than a minute because loud boos, jeers and chants of "get out of here" and "nobody wants you" drowned out his voice, according to Fox News.

Mamdani eventually smiled, thanked the crowd with a hand-over-his-heart gesture, waved and walked offstage.

The boos come after Mamdani faced criticism for his previous stance on law enforcement and his attempt to dismiss an incident in February where a group of people pelted NYPD officers with snowballs. Mamdani claimed the incident was "kids" taking part in a snowball fight, despite two officers being injured.

Mamdani has also attempted to distance himself from the "defund the police" movement he supported in 2020, following the death of George Floyd. The mayor has emphasized that he no longer wants to defund the police department.
