New Jersey Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill joined a Memorial Day rally outside of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the city of Newark to support detainees inside who are on a hunger strike over living conditions and medical care.

Detainees' family members say their relatives inside the facility are being fed rotten food and are not provided with adequate medical care, according to The New York Times.

“No matter what your immigration status is, you shouldn’t be treated with anything less than dignity in this country,” Sherrill said at the rally.

After Sherrill left the rally, a tense standoff erupted between ICE agents and the protesters, who were blocking the entrance.

Agents fired pepper balls and spray into the crowd. Democrat Sen. Andy Kim was reportedly hit while trying to de-escalate the situation.
