New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez confirmed Tuesday that her district office in the Bronx has received a suspicious letter that is similar to letters sent to other lawmakers recently and that federal authorities are investigating the incident.

Senior Capitol Hill staff were notified last week that "letters containing suspicious substances" were mailed out to multiple congressional offices and an image of one of the envelopes carrying the letter included a return address for the Democratic Socialists of America headquarters. However, the DSA has reported that it has not been at that location since 2013.

Ocasio-Cortez said that the New York City Police Department, U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI are investigating the letter.

“Today, my Hunts Point District Office received a suspicious letter consistent with those received by dozens of elected officials across the country," Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement. "I am grateful to local and federal law enforcement who quickly responded to investigate the matter and worked to ensure the safety of my staff.

“This string of suspicious mailings started two weeks before a consequential midterm election and is seemingly intended to intimidate public servants and sow further division," she continued. “Political violence has no place in our country. It is always unacceptable, and we must all refuse to normalize an unsafe and volatile political environment where everyday people are put at risk.”

The letters appeared to be affecting people from both political parties, with Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz reporting a letter, along with Nebraska Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts. Authorities intercepted letters intended for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, according to The Guardian.
