Michigan GOP Sen nominee Rogers calls for end to Canada 'tariff war' in final stretch of tight race
Ottawa and Washington nearly reached a trade agreement earlier this year, but it fell apart at the last minute, leading to a public spat between Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
Michigan GOP Senate nominee Mike Rogers on Wednesday urged the Trump administration to end its trade war with the state's neighboring Canada, setting up a break with President Donald Trump on the issue.
Ottawa and Washington nearly reached a trade agreement earlier this year, but it fell apart at the last minute, leading to a public spat between Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Trump later renamed Lake Ontario to "Lake America." Rogers, who is seeking Michigan's open Senate seat, called for a rapprochement with Canada in his latest ad.
"Prices are too high and Canada is not our enemy. We need to end the tariff war — now. In the Senate, I’ll bring both parties together to lower costs and put Michigan families first," he said in a social media post accompanying the ad, which called to "end the tariff war now."
Rogers is facing off against Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in what is expected to be one of the closest races of the cycle in the battle for the upper chamber.
