Sinkhole at LaGuardia airport to keep runway closed through holiday weekend, delays continue

Crews discovered the sinkhole using ground-penetrating radar during a daily morning inspection of the airfield, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The sinkhole discovered Wednesday at LaGuadia International Airport in New York City will keep one of its two runways closed until Saturday morning – extending some delays and cancellations. 

The sinkhole was discovered during a daily morning inspection of the airfield, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, according to ABC News.  

Crews were using ground-penetrating radar when they discovered "areas of concern. To conduct further inspections and repairs, the runway was closed. 

Officials said the airport remains open, and flight operations are continuing. However, travelers should check flight status for delays and cancellations.
