President Donald Trump on Wednesday posted a photo of the newly-released Stephen Hubbard with his family on the way home from Russia, after he brokered a deal with Moscow to secure his release.

"Stephen Hubbard and Family COMING HOME from Russia. Should have been done a long time ago by Sleepy Joe Biden and the Dumocrats!" he posted on Truth Social. Accompanying his comments was an image of Hubbard and his family on a plane, posing with an American flag.

Trump announced that Russia had released Hubbard this week, and further appeared to gloat over his critics who had attacked his decision to ease sanctions on Russia in an energy deal.

"Numerous people, who requested that sanctions be immediately imposed on Russia, have called to apologize to President Trump in that they didn’t know that he was negotiating the release of Stephen Hubbard, a truly big  and important deal for the U.S." he posted separately. "If sanctions would have been placed, certainly those negotiations would have come to a complete and total halt."
