Abortion doctor reported alleged 27-year-old illegal immigrant rapist as 17-year-old on forms
Doctor had initially refused to provide any clarifying information regarding the case.
An abortion doctor who ignited international controversy with claims of a 10-year-old rape victim seeking abortion across state lines identified the girl's alleged 27-year-old abuser as a 17-year-old on child protective forms, media reports revealed this week.
Caitlan Bernard has been at the center of a political firestorm when she told the Indianapolis Star earlier this month that she had performed an abortion on a 10-year-old Ohio girl who had been the victim of rape in her home state.
The case touched off controversy in the wake of Roe v. Wade's repeal due to the girl's reportedly having had to seek the abortion in Indiana due to Ohio's restrictive laws. Bernard initially refused to offer media any additional information on the case.
This week, however, law enforcement revealed that they had arrested 27-year-old Gerson Fuentes and charged him with the rape. Fuentes reportedly admitted to the crime.
Bernard, meanwhile, allegedly identified the individual as a minor while filling out the necessary child protective forms after performing the abortion.
Bernard "reported that the alleged rapist was approximately 17-years-old in an official filing to the Indiana Department of Health," Fox News reported late Thursday, citing the filing which it had obtained.
Whether or not Bernard was aware of the alleged rapist's true age is unknown. The New York Times noted that, in such cases, "doctors often make their best guess," particularly when "little may be known about the perpetrator."
Fuentes is reportedly being held on $2 million bond due to the charges.
