Antisemitic hate crimes in New York City up 275% in January, compared to same month last year

Several alleged hate crimes against Jews were committed during the first weekend in February as well.

Antisemitic hate crimes spiked nearly 300% in New York in January, compared to the same month last year, as the NYPD investigates another two incidents that occurred this past weekend.

During the first month of 2022, 15 hate crimes were committed against Jewish people – a 275% increase compared to the four committed in January 2021, according to a report by Fox News.

During the first weekend in February, another two potential hate crimes were reported as yeshiva school buses were tagged with Swastikas, and a Hasidic man was attacked from behind on Friday night. The New York Police Department is investigating both incidents as hate crimes.

Scott Richman, the regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, said that crimes against Jews are "becoming normalized."

"Attacks against visibly identifiable Jews here in New York and New Jersey have become practically a weekly occurrence," he said.

The ADL is working with the NYPD to help track down those who committed the hate crimes over the weekend. The organization is offering a $7,500 reward for any information that could lead to an arrest or conviction.
