Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested and charged a man with homicide in connection with the death of a 29-year-old Black woman whose body was found hanging from a tree in August. 

Tasia Fortune, a mother of four, was found dead behind a vacant home on Aug. 3, and the state medical examiner’s office determined Thursday evening her death was a homicide. 

At a news conference, Jackson police chief RaShall Brackney-Wheelock said that police had secured search and arrest warrants for Jacques Ratliff and arrested him, The Guardian reported. 

The case attracted national attention because of Mississippi's history of racial violence and lynching. It was one of 10 cases cited in a letter by 60 Democrats, including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who are demanding that the Department of Justice look into what they say is a "series of deaths that raise significant suspicion of foul play given the role of lynching in our nation’s history." 

The letter was criticized on social media because the cases cited as examples of recent lynchings were ruled suicides or were under investigation.

Brackney-Wheelock wouldn't discuss a motive, but did say that the suspect is a 51-year-old Black man who knew Fortune.
