Fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO on Manhattan streets a 'targeted' murder,' NYC mayor

There have been no arrests made and there is an ongoing investigation.

The fatal shooting Wednesday morning of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan was a targeted attack, New York City Mayor Eric Adams says

“It appears as though this was a targeted murder,” Adams said in a press conference, according to PBS News.

Thompson was fatally shot at about 7 a.m. outside of a hotel. on 54th Street between 6th and 7th avenues.

Thompson was rushed to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead, according to the New York Post.

Police are reported looking for a masked gunman. 

Thompson was in Manhattan for a conference inside of the hotel, outside of which the shooter was waiting. The shooter fled the crime scene on a e-bike after shooting Thompson, according to the Post.  

Thompson became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021 and joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004.
