The Department of Justice is actively exploring a ban on gun possession for transgender individuals in the wake of a mass shooting at a Catholic school by a transgender gunman, Breitbart News reported, citing "multiple sources familiar with the matter."

The Office of Legal Council has reportedly organized multiple meetings to explore the possibility of denying transgender people access to firearms on grounds of mental illness.

Such a move would mark a significant legal development in the government treatment of transgender people and would be near-certain to face legal challenges.

While the Minneapolis school shooting has reignited discussion of the prospect, the August incident was not the first lethal attack on Christians by a transgender shooter. In 2023, transgender shooter Audrey Hale committed a mass shooting at the Covenant school in Nashville, Tenn.

That incident led to a protracted legal battle to secure the release of Hale's manifesto.
