At least five people were killed and 18 others were injured in a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, officials said.

The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich, who allegedly used a long rifle in the shooting Saturday evening at Club Q, Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez said.

Two people confronted the gunman inside of the club after he began shooting, and the violence lasted minutes before police arrived, CNN reported.

"We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack," Club Q posted on Facebook.
