Five Phoenix police officers wounded in early morning shootout
The circumstances of the ambush remain unclear.
Five police officers in Phoenix, Arizona were shot during an ambush as they responded to reports of gunfire inside a home early on Friday. Four officers were injured while attempting to get a baby to safety.
Four additional officers were injured by flying shrapnel and ricocheting bullets. All are expected to survive according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Williams.
The suspect in the incident was found deceased inside the home following what was described as a barricade situation. A woman was also found critically injured at the scene. The baby at the scene was unharmed.
"This is just one more example of the dangers that officers face every day keeping us and our community safe. If I seem upset, I am. This is senseless. It does not need to happen and it continues to happen over and over again," said Williams.
Officers are still trying to learn the exact circumstances of the incident.
