Former Indiana GOP congressional candidate charged with stealing ballots

A former Indiana Republican congressional hopeful turned himself in on Tuesday after an arrest warrant was issued for allegedly stealing election ballots during a voting machine test earlier this month.

Larry Savage, who lost the May Republican primary for the 5th Congressional District of Indiana, has been charged with one felony count of destroying or misplacing a ballot, and one misdemeanor count of theft, per CBS News.

The charges come after officials noticed two ballot cards missing during a test of the ballot voting card system in Madison County on Oct. 3, where officials tested 132 ballots and four voting machines. Video surveillance allegedly showed Savage pocketing the ballots after being told they were valid test ballots, Indiana State Police said. 

Savage was a precinct committeeman at the time.

A judge approved a search warrant for Savage's house after the video, where police found the missing ballots in his car. Savage has since turned himself into the Madison County Jail after an arrest warrant was issued, and he was released after paying a $500 cash bond.
