Infamous drug lord's son extradited to US on drug trafficking charges
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said that this arrest shows federal law enforcement's dedication to going after the cartels.
Infamous Mexican cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán's son was extradited to the U.S. to face charges of drug trafficking, according to an announcement from the Department of Homeland Security.
The son, Ovidio Guzmán López currently faces charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and other violent crimes.
“The extradition of López is testament to the significance of the ongoing cooperation between the American and Mexican governments on countering narcotics and other vital challenges, and we thank our Mexican counterparts for their partnership in working to safeguard our peoples from violent criminals,” DHS advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall said in the Friday statement.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said that this arrest shows federal law enforcement's dedication to going after the cartels.
“This action is the most recent step in the Justice Department’s effort to attack every aspect of the cartel’s operations,” Garland said, according to The Associated Press. “The fight against the cartels has involved incredible courage by United States law enforcement and Mexican law enforcement and military service members, many of whom have given their lives in the pursuit of justice.”
Guzmán López along with his two brothers are believed to be members of the Sinaloa cartel, which has been well-known for trafficking fentanyl to the U.S. through Mexico.
