Man who attacked Rep. Angie Craig gets 27 months in prison
He had twelve prior criminal convictions.
The man who attacked Minnesota Democratic Rep. Angie Craig in February received 27 months in prison on Thursday.
Kendrid Khalil Hamlin pleaded guilty to assaulting Craig in June. During the episode, Hamlin followed Craig into her apartment building and onto the elevator. He informed the lawmaker that he planned to use her bathroom, resulting in a violent altercation when she refused. Craig ultimately escaped Hamlin's clutches by splashing him with hot coffee. Craig was left bruised from the alternation.
During the Thursday sentencing, Hamlin apologized to Craig "for putting my hands on her," according to The Hill.
"While this case has received much attention because I am a Member of Congress, that morning I was simply a woman followed into an elevator by a man and assaulted there," Craig said in a victim impact statement. "Mr. Hamlin trapped me inside. He grabbed my neck and slammed me into the steel wall. He punched me in the face. He attempted to pull me back in as the doors opened, and I screamed for help. Physically, the attack left bruising and a cut to my lip, as well as several days of soreness and discomfort."
She further indicated that he had been forced to break her lease when a media outlet identified the D.C. apartment building where the attack occurred.
"I sincerely hope Mr. Hamlin, during his incarceration and subsequent conditions of release, is provided the mental health and addiction services that will allow him to become a productive member of society," she concluded. "Until that occurs, given his history of previous convictions and my own experience, I believe he would continue to be a further threat to others."
