Minnesota school shooting leaves one student dead, one injured

A shooting at South Education Center in Richfield, Minnesota, left one student dead and another in critical condition on Tuesday.

Richfield police officers responded to the scene shortly after noon and found two students fighting for their lives on the sidewalk outside of the school, Chief Jay Henthorne said, KTSP reports.

The students were taken to a local hospital. One later succumbed to injuries while the other is in critical condition, Henthorne reports.

Surrounding schools were placed under a lockdown that was later lifted. 

The suspects fled after the shooting, but there is not an ongoing threat to civilians, officials stated.

Intermediate District 287 released a statement, per KTSP.

"Earlier this afternoon a reported school shooting took place at the South Education Center. While this tragic situation did not involve any of our Transition Plus students or staff, it is something we are watching closely. District 287, which operates out of the South Education Center, is one of our partners," the district stated. "At this time, we do not have any additional information We have communicated with our families who have students in Transition Plus and will ensure our SEC students and staff have additional mental health support this week. We will communicate more information when we have it."

Gov. Tim Walz said on Twitter that he is monitoring the situation.
