NYPD evacuates park near NYC's Gracie Mansion over new ‘suspicious package'
The police department did not specify where the new package was located but advised pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area around the park.
The New York Police Department evacuated Carl Schurz Park in New York City Tuesday afternoon because of another "suspicious package" that was found near the mayor's residence.
The new package comes after chaos broke out near Gracie Mansion on Saturday after explosive devices were thrown during protests. Officials confirmed that one device was a real homemade explosive that could cause serious damage.
The NYPD did not specify where the new package was located but advised pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area around the park. It was not immediately clear if it was a real explosive, a hoax, or something discarded near the scene.
"Due to a suspicious device, East End Avenue between East 85th and East 87th Street, as well as East 86th Street between York Avenue and East End Avenue are closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic," NYPD posted on X. "Additionally, Carl Schurz Park is closed at this time."
It is not clear if the latest package is related to Saturday's incident. Two people have been arrested and charged in relation to the "ISIS inspired" attack, and the FBI searched a Pennsylvania storage unit Monday where it found explosive residue.
