An Oregon man accused of torturing a woman he kidnapped died Tuesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an hours-long standoff, according to police.

Authorities are expected to hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon on the matter.

The Grants Pass, Oregon, police department confirmed Tuesday that after a long standoff, Benjamin Foster, 26, was in custody for attempted murder, kidnapping and assault.

Police spokesperson Jeff Hattersley later in the evening told local outlet News 10 that Foster died in a hospital from his gunshot wound.

Foster reportedly hid underneath a Grants Pass home as a SWAT team attempted to convince him to surrender. The house is the same one in which that Foster allegedly attempted to kill a woman.

Police last week went to the house after receiving a call about an assault. When officers arrived, they said they found a woman "bound and severely beaten into unconsciousness." She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Foster was convicted in 2019 of holding his then-girlfriend captive for two weeks when he lived in Las Vegas. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after reaching a deal with Clark County prosecutors, according to CBS News.
