California mass shooting leaves nine dead, police say
It is unclear whether a suspect was taken into custody.
Nine people are dead after a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Sunday.
County homicide detectives are assisting the Monterey Park Police Department in investigating the shooting, which occurred Saturday around 10:20 p.m. local time, according to officials.
The shooting happened downtown where a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration occurred earlier that evening, according to the city's website.
It is unclear whether a suspect, described by police as a male, was taken into custody.
Monterey Park is located in Los Angeles County. It has a population of just under 60,000, according to Census data.
