Prosecutor says Bankman-Fried made "tens of millions of dollars” in illegal campaign contributions
Crypto maven facing money laundering, wire fraud charges.
Embattled crypto maven Sam Bankman-Fried made massive illegal campaign donations with the billions of dollars he commanded prior to the collapse of his FTX cryptocurrency exchange platform, prosecutors said Tuesday.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said at a press conference that Bankman-Fried made "tens of millions of dollars" in illegal campaign donations, presumably using the roughly $26 billion he commanded at the peak of his net worth.
Williams called the overall scandal surrounding Bankman-Fried "one of the biggest frauds in American history."
The fallen crypto mover is facing a wide variety of charges from prosecutors, including wire fraud, money laundering, and other crimes.
He could face decades in prison if convicted on those counts.
