Sen. Blackburn has a solution to botched lethal injection: 'bring back the electric chair'

"This situation is tragic. Christa Pike should have been executed long ago. Now, this botched process is extending the pain for the family of Colleen Slemmer," Blackburn wrote.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., who is running for governor of the state, proposed a solution to the botched execution of a woman Wednesday night.

"The answer is simple: bring back the electric chair and deliver justice for these victims swiftly. As your governor, I will do just that," Blackburn said in a post on X.

Tennessee tried to execute Christa Gail Pike Wednesday evening, but after two injections of pentobarbital, Pike was still alive, her lawyers said in court filings Wednesday. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee halted executions in the state.

“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” Lee said in a statement.

Pike and her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, were convicted of the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The case drew national attention in part because of a pentagram that was carved into Slemmer's body. This was during the "satanic panic" of the 1980s and 1990s.

Pike doesn't deny she committed the killing, and Shipp has admitted he carved a pentagram into Slemmer's body. Shipp was 17 when the crime was committed, which made him ineligible for the death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Blackburn argued that there should be a thorough review of what happened and why the process failed.

"This situation is tragic. Christa Pike should have been executed long ago. Now, this botched process is extending the pain for the family of Colleen Slemmer," Blackburn wrote.
