Eight dead, 10 hurt after being struck by vehicle in Texas border city, police say
The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time Sunday, and it is unclear what led to the incident, The Associated Press reported.
At least eight people are dead and 10 others are injured after a vehicle struck them as they waited at an unmarked bus stop across the street from a migrant shelter in Brownsville, Texas, police said Sunday.
The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time Sunday, and it is unclear what led to the incident, The Associated Press reported.
Most of the victims were Venezuelan men, according to Victor Maldonado, director of the migrant shelter known as the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center.
Maldonado said he reviewed the shelter's surveillance footage after the incident. "What we see in the video is that this SUV, a Range Rover, just ran the light that was about a 100 feet away and just went through the people who were sitting there in the bus stop," he said.
The SUV flipped after running up the curb and continued going for 200 feet, and some people standing about 30 feet away from the main group also were struck, Maldonado said.
The driver attempted to run from the scene, but witnesses detained him until police arrived, he also said.
Brownsville police spokesperson Martin Sandoval said the driver is a Brownsville resident and a Hispanic male, according to local outlet KRGV.
He said they are investigating the cause of the accident.
"I know there is a report out there, they are saying that it was intentional. That Brownsville police is saying this was an intentional accident," Sandoval said. "Well, I'm here to clarify that Brownsville police has never taken the stand that this was an intentional accident. It is a factor that we have to look at."
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are responding to the scene.
"Their role is they are helping us out simply because there were some migrants involved and of course the migrants are under the custody and care of Border Patrol. So that's why it becomes a government entity issue," Sandoval also said.
Brownsville is located at the southern tip of Texas on the border with Mexico.
