Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani's ex interpreter charged with stealing millions from player

Major League Baseball star Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter was charged Thursday for allegedly stealing over $16 million from the athlete. 

Ippei Mizuhara, who used to interpret for Ohtani and acted as his de facto manager, allegedly accessed his account and used the money for an illegal gambling operation, according to NBC News. 

He was charged with bank fraud. 

"I want to emphasize this point, Mr. Ohtani is considered a victim in this case. There is no evidence to indicate that Mr. Ohtani authorized the over $16 million of transfers," U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Martin Estrada said during a press conference. 

Prosecutors argue that the stolen money was used in an illegal gambling operation. 

If Mizuhara is convicted, he could face a maximum of 30 years in prison. 

Last year, Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the largest free agent deal in Major League Baseball history.  

According to the authorities, he has been assisting with the ongoing investigation.
