The suspect in the Gilgo Beach killing case was arrested Thursday evening and has been indicted on one count of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder in each of three killings that took place in 2009 and 2010, CNN reports.

The suspect is 59-year-old Rex Heuermann and he has entered a not guilty plea.

He was remanded without bail Friday and his next court date is scheduled for August 1.

The remains of 11 people found between 2010 and 2011 have long stumped investigators, and the story inspired a Netflix film titled "Lost Girls."

Many of the women who were killed had been sex workers, and most of the bodies were found near Gilgo Beach.

It has taken law enforcement in New York years to find the killer, and a task force wasn't formed until 2022, CNN reports.

It has been hinted by authorities that more charges are likely coming.
