One student dead, two hospitalized after Iowa high school shooting
The high school has canceled classes on Tuesday.
One student is dead and two others are hospitalized following a shooting on Monday at East High School in Des Moines, Iowa.
Fire department spokesperson Ahman Douglass told CNN that the victims include two boys and one girl, all of whom have been taken to local hospitals.
The high school was placed on lockdown but taken off shortly thereafter. Des Moines Public Schools tweeted around 3:30 p.m. local time that students have the all-clear and will be dismissed on time.
School is canceled on Thursday, and the district is working with Des Moines police, according to a statement from officials.
The Des Moines Public Schools superintendent released a statement after the shooting calling for a change in gun laws.
"We live in an era when shootings in and near schools have become too common," Superintendent Thomas Ahart said. "Our staff and students are forced to train for these incidents and the trauma associated with the repeated drills and incidents will remain with them for years to come. It’s unfortunate that our state and our country have become a place where firearms are far too easily accessible. We remain committed to protecting our students and staff, but real change to gun laws and access would go a long way to help us."
