Two people were shot outside of New York GOP gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin's home on Long Island with his two teenage daughters inside.
"My daughters Mikaya and Ariana were doing homework on the first floor," Zeldin told the New York Post. "They heard the shots. Boom! They went upstairs and locked themselves in the bathroom."
Zeldin was not at his home in Shirley, which is in Suffolk County, at the time and he says he does not know who was shot.
Zeldin released a statement via twitter, where he stated that one of the bullets was just 30 feet away from his home, and he was proud of his daughters for acting very "swiftly and smartly."
Zeldin's 16-year-old twin daughters called the police from their house around 2:20 p.m. according to the police.
"The local police have cordoned off the area," Zeldin told the New York Post.
A law enforcement source confirmed that the shooting took place in front of Zeldin's home but said it had "nothing to do with him," according to the outlet.
Two people were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries. "There was blood in the rock right next to the porch," Zeldin said. "One of the shooting victims was underneath the porch. The other was underneath bushes near the porch."
