Academy Awards begin 'disciplinary proceedings' against Will Smith
He faces "suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions."
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Wednesday started "disciplinary proceedings" against Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock during the Oscars over the weekend and then refusing the leave the venue when asked.
"The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy," the statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter said.
The academy apologized to Rock and said, "Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, [but] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."
Smith, who went on to win the Oscar for Best Actor in "King Richard" after slapping Rock, will receive 15 days notice before the Academy votes. He will be able to give a written response as well.
He faces "suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct" from the academy at its next meeting on April 18, the outlet reported.
Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Rock told the audience, "Jada, I love you. 'G.I. Jane 2,' can’t wait to see it."
Pinkett Smith shaves her head due to her alopecia.
Will Smith went on stage, slapped Rock and screamed twice, "Get my wife's name out your f*****g mouth!"
