D-Day's lonely 76th anniversary is in sharp contrast to the year before

Saturday’s 76th anniversary of D-Day will be one of the loneliest remembrances ever, as the coronavirus pandemic is keeping almost everyone away.

Saturday’s 76th anniversary of D-Day will be one of the loneliest remembrances ever, as the coronavirus pandemic is keeping almost everyone away.

For the first time in the history of the National D-Day Memorial, guests will not be on site to commemorate the anniversary— a turning point in World War II that marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.

While officials and leaders felt it would be best to host 76th anniversary commemoration events virtually, this is in contrast with last year's ceremony with U.S. President Donald Trump joining French President Emmanuel Macron at the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach.
