Dan and Tanya Snyder to sell Washington Commanders to Josh Harris-led group
Harris currently owns the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and the New Jersey Devils hockey team.
Dan and Tanya Snyder have finalized a deal to sell the Washington Commanders for more than $6 billion to a group led by Josh Harris.
Harris and company will pay $6.05 billion for the team, according to ESPN. That figure marks a record for the sale of a franchise.
"We are very pleased to have reached an agreement for the sale of the Commanders franchise with Josh Harris, an area native, and his impressive group of partners. We look forward to the prompt completion of this transaction and to rooting for Josh and the team in the coming years," the Snyders said of the deal.
Harris currently owns the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and the New Jersey Devils hockey team. His group includes at least 12 limited partners, per the outlet, of which former NBA star Magic Johnson is one.
"I want to express how excited we are to be considered by the NFL to be the next owners of the Washington Commanders and how committed we are to delivering a championship-caliber franchise for this city and its fanbase," Harris said.
Dan Snyder originally bought the team in 1999, when it was still known as the Washington Redskins. During his time as owner, pressure mounted to change the name over concerns it was offensive to American Indians. The team briefly played under the designation of the "Washington Football Team" before settling on the Commanders nickname.
