Glenn Youngkin calls for gender-neutral bathrooms during CNN town hall

GOP Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin called for gender-neutral bathrooms in response to a question from a transgender teenager during a CNN town hall on education this week.
“Look at me. I am a transgender man,” a 17-year-old from Arlington, Va., said to Youngkin during the town hall. “Do you really think that the girls in my high school would feel comfortable sharing a restroom with me?”
Youngkin responded to the question, noting that it's important that all students be accommodated.
“That’s why I have said many, many times, we just need extra bathrooms in schools,” he responded to the question. “We need gender-neutral bathrooms so people can use the bathroom that they, in fact, are comfortable with.”
Youngkin has been most well known for tackling education during his time as Virginia's governor with stances such as banning critical race theory and rules regarding transgender bathrooms in schools.
Since getting into office, Youngkin and his administration changed the Virginia Department of Education's policies regarding transgender students.
The updated policies state that a transgender child is "a public school student whose parent has requested in writing, due to their child’s persistent and sincere belief that his or her gender differs with his or her sex, that their child be so identified while at school."
The updated policy also says that students have to use the bathroom and locker room of their biological sex.
