Spain’s soccer president says ‘will not resign’ after lip kissing player after Women's World Cup win
One teammater of the player has publicly condemned the president.
Spanish soccer federation President Luis Rubiales says he won't submit to calls for his resignation for lip kissing a player on the women national team after it won the World Cup earlier this year.
"I will not resign," Rubiales repeatedly said Thursday, according to the Associated Press. He also said the pressure for him to resign – or be fired – is coming from "false feminists."
Rubiales is being accused of kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her consent while celebrating the World Cup victory earlier this month. Despite Hermoso stating she "didn’t like it," Rubiales maintains the kiss was consensual.
Hermoso’s teammate, Alexia Putellas, posted on X on Friday that the kiss was "unacceptable" and that she stands in solidarity with Hermoso.
The Federation Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, which runs the World Cup tournaments, is investigating the matter.
