Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani becomes first player to get 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in one season
The record-breaking match was against the Miami Marlins, where Ohtani scored his 49th, 50th, and 51st home runs. He also stole two bases during the game, becoming the first player to ever hit three runs and steal two bases in a single game.
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani on Thursday night became the first Major League Baseball (MLB) player to score 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single MLB season.
The record-breaking game was against the Miami Marlins, where Ohtani scored his 49th, 50th, and 51st home runs. He also stole two bases during the game, becoming the first player to ever hit three runs and steal two bases in a single game.
Dodgers star Shawn Green held the previous franchise record of 49 home runs in a single season, which he set in 2001, according to the Associated Press.
“It was something I wanted to get over as quickly as possible. And, you know, it’s something that I’m going to cherish for a very long time,” Ohtani said in a televised interview. “To be honest, I’m the one probably most surprised ... I have no idea where this came from, but I’m glad that it was going well today.”
The Japanese star's previous record for most home runs in a season was 46 in 2021, as part of the Los Angeles Angels. He moved to the Dodgers last December, after signing a 10-year $700 million contract.
