General Motors on Friday laid off more than 200 salaried employees, according to a news report.

The laid-off employees were mostly Computer-Aided Design engineers who worked at GM's global tech campus in Detroit, according to the company, CNBC reported.

“We’re restructuring our design engineering team to strengthen our core architectural design engineering capabilities,” GM told the news outlet. “As a result, a number of CAD execution roles have been eliminated. We recognize the efforts and accomplishments of the impacted team members, and we thank them for their contributions.”

GM declined to say how many employees were laid off, but an unnamed source told CNBC that it was more than 200 employees.

The jobs were being terminated due to “business conditions,” not the employees' performance, they were told via Microsoft Teams calls on Friday, according to the source.

From 2023 to 2024, GM's salaried employees in the U.S. dropped from 53,000 to 50,000.

GM shares are up more than 29% this year, and hit a new 52-week high on Friday.
