Indexes poised to rebound today as global markets surge and new Gilead drug shows promise
Dow is up 600 points as the markets open
The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened to a 600 point gain Friday morning. The S&P 500 was up 2.5%.
The Dow was up nearly 800 points in premarket trading as a report indicated that a drug from Gilead Sciences, whose shared leapt 13% in premarket trading, was showing effectiveness in treating coronavirus patients.
S&P 500 futures rose just under 3%, which would put the index on track for its first back-to-back gain weekly gain since February.
Global markets surged today as the major European indexes rose 3%-4%. Asian markets also closed high.
On Thursday evening, President Trump told governors that they could start reopening businesses in their states by May 1, or earlier if they feel it is appropriate.
Boeing announced plans to bring back 27,000 employees in Washington State, as the company makes plans to resume aircraft production. Most workers will be back at their jobs by the end of next week, said the company. The announcement marks the first major U.S. corporation to attempt a large-scale resumption of activity.
