New York Democrat lawmaker calls Republicans 'economic terrorists'
The White House said earlier this week that it has to negotiate with Congress and find a compromise.
New York Democrat Rep. Jamaal Bowman criticized President Joe Biden for working with Republicans on negotiations over the debt ceiling.
"I'm very frustrated," Bowman told CNN during an interview. "I called on the president to invoke the 14th Amendment and mint a coin and do not negotiate with hostage-takers."
He then proceeded to call Republicans "economic terrorists."
"I mean, we don't negotiate with terrorists globally," he stated. "Why are we gonna negotiate with the economic terrorists here that are the Republican Party?"
The Democrats for months called for a "clean" debt ceiling increase, while the Republicans have called for a plan that would crack down on government spending.
The U.S. could be forced to default on its debt by June 1, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
The White House said earlier this week that it has to negotiate with Congress and find a compromise.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters during a press conference that the best plan is "for Congress to do their jobs without conditions," according to the Washington Examiner.
