Thousands expected for George Floyd public viewing in Houston, Biden to visit family
Houston will be the third public memorial for Floyd, the first two occurred in Minneapolis and North Carolina, last week and over the weekend
Thousands of mourners are expect Monday in Houston for the public viewing of George Floyd, who died two weeks ago as a result of Minnesota police arrest. City officials are preparing for as many as 10,000 visitors.
Floyd was primarily raised in the Third Ward of Houston, and will be buried at the Fort Bend Memorial Planning Center alongside family members. Hundreds gathered in North Carolina for a public viewing of Floyd's casket on Saturday.
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will fly to Houston to meet with the Floyd family ahead of the funeral service on Tuesday. The former vice president will not attend the service due to concerns about disruptions that his Secret Service detail would cause.
Biden's trip to Texas is his first outing outside of his home state of Delaware and next door Philadelphia in several months.
Expected at the funeral are the mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner and actor Jamie Foxx.
Floyd's death on Memorial Day sparked a wave of protests across the nation. Thousands have gathered to stand up to police brutality and systemic racism. Large crowds gathered in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia this weekend to continue the effort. .
