LaGuardia Airport in New York was closed after an Air Canada regional aircraft collided with an airport fire and rescue vehicle while landing. At least two people died and dozens of injuries were reported, including at least three classified as in critical condition.
The incident took place just before midnight Sunday local time.
Social media posts show the aircraft suffered severe damage to its nose, and the aircraft itself propped up. Audio from air traffic controllers show they warned “truck one” to stay out of the path of Air Canada Express flight AC8646, which was arriving in New York from Montreal.
The runway where the crash happened was immediately closed, with other incoming flights diverted around it. Soon after, the entire airport was closed with flights grounded, and incoming flights sent to nearby airports including JFK and Newark, according to reports.
The injured were rushed to three nearby hospitals, while the condition of passengers to appeared unharmed were assessed at the airport, reports said.
The Federal Aviation Administration has opened a probe into the events leading up to the crash.
It was not immediately clear if the government shutdown that has left some airport workers without pay for five weeks was a factor in the crash.
More details are expected over the course of the day.
