A major fire in Brooklyn killed three people from the same family and injured 14 others early Sunday morning, the New York Fire Department said.

The three-alarm fire was in a three-story building in the neighborhood of Crown Heights, according to the fire department.

In total, 17 residents and one firefighter were taken from the scene for medical treatment. Three of the residents had critical injuries that they later succumbed to, according to multiple news reports

The New York Post, citing a neighbor and housing records, identified the deceased as Albertha West, 81, her son, Michael West, 58, and her grandson, Jamiyl West, 33. The fire department did not immediately confirm the victims' identities.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
